Midi Dude Says:
I love my Slim Phatty!,
I have had no problems with my Slim which I have owned for about 4 months. I think this meets Moog’s usual great standard and if you don’t need the keys that go with the LP then this is an excellent less expensive solution. I have found that I think the SP runs a little hot but I don’t think that is all that surprising in such a small enclosure, I should point out that I had it running for about 5 hours when I noticed this.
I mainly bought this synth for the analog sound. Once you hear that ladder filter you’ll understand what makes it great. It can get downright dirty with the growls and squelches of course but also give you that warm filter sweep. I have some other synths I combine it with to create some pretty other worldly sounds, and since I do this live on stage the colored lights are very helpful. They tell you where the parameters are at in dark situations on stage. I mix this out via an adapter that lets me go out to 2 channel on the mixer so I have a lot of flexibility.
All in all I am very satisfied with my Little Phatty!

Full of bugs! Shouldn’t have been released at all!,
Right out of the box this thing was full of midi issues. Very disappointed. I’ve been working with synths for forty years and this is the biggest piece of junk I’ve ever seen. Just Google “Slim Phatty issues/problems” before considering to buy this and you’ll get the picture. Everyone is having issues. Moog should hang their head in shame! But hey…if you’re looking for an $800 doorstop with pretty lights – this is for you!
Edit: in response to the comment to this review, I repeat – Google “slim phatty issues” before you buy and you’ll get the truth about this unit. I’ve worked with midi for over 20 years and never has any other instrument failed as miserably as this unit. If what you wrote is true, then why do Moog personnel like Amos wrestle so unsuccessfully with getting the issues resolved (check Moog forum)! Also, I sent a simple request to Moog via email…there was an automated response saying they would reply within 3 days…that was over a week ago! No word! How’s that for customer service?
As the owner of eight professional synths and a former music store sales associate specializing in keyboards, I have a pretty good knowledge base on how these things are supposed to work. In addition, I’ve been an inspector/auditor in a leading auto parts facility for 15 years and I know good quality when I see it. I also know poor quality when I see it. I can tell you that if I found issues in any of our parts that parallelled that of the Slim Phatty, they would be quarantined and not allowed out of the plant until the issues were resolved! But then, our goal is to continually meet or exceed our customer’s expectations. Sadly, not all companies embrace that philosophy.
